Ryoan-Ji is a tourist spot where people can enjoy seasonal views all year round. Especially, in spring, cherry trees bloom on the approach to main hall and people can enjoy the vivid scenery. In addition, water lilies in summer, autumn leaves in autumn and atmospheric scenery of snow in winter.

Ryoan-Ji is now known around the world for Karesansui rock gardens, but it became famous so far in 1975 when Elizabeth II officially visited Ryoan-Ji and praised the rock gardens. This garden that is so beautiful that many tourists will admire it and is full of people throughout the year.

Karesansui rock garden is best known for its exquisite dry landscape garden without any trees in main hall, which consists of 15 rocks of various sizes placed harmoniously on white gravel. It has an interesting trick that one of the fifteen rocks is designed to be invisible when viewed from any angle in front of the garden. Let7s count them all!!

Gorgeous Door Drawings…
One of the highlights of Ryoanji’s main hall is the sliding door painting that has returned more than 100 years since the release in 1895. Currently it’s not open to the public now, but be sure to visit Ryoan-Ji at the right time when these picture will be released again.

In addition to famous Karesansui rock garden, the garden centered on Kyoto Pond, which occupies about half of the grounds, enjoys the flowers of the four seasons. It is a simple garden of Zen temple based on the spirit of Wabi Sabi, and a gorgeous garden colored by the flowers of the four seasons. Having two different gardens is one of the great attractions of Ryoan-Ji.
