Kyoto Food #5: 茶屋 猿屋【Tea house Saruya】

Special sweets at Shimogamo Shrine
Tea house Saruya in Kyoto

Shimogamo shrine is represented one of the World Heritage in Kyoto. It’s well known as a beautiful shrine and bring visitors good luck and relationship or something like that.

Do you know its traditional Japanese sweets made a comeback at Saruya for the first time in 140 years. The name is called “Sarumochi”, a specialty of Aoi Festival. It has comeback this time, relying on lore, and has become a new specialty.

The old-style house room

I think poeple who have visited Shimogamo shrine once already knew the tea room Saruya because it’s right in front of the famous tower-gate. On May 15, 2011, a small teahouse named “Saruya” opened there and was also the first tea house unlikely for Shimogamo Shrine, which boasts a vast precinct.

When you go inside the shop, you feel Japanese traditional atmosphere and smell of tea is so good. It has  huge space inside so you sit and take a rest there if you’re tired!!

Elegant Sweetness

Sarumochi is so amazing, which brings out the best taste and flavor of the ingredients. And Hojicha tea taste-like traditional Kyoto goes together so well with “Shomochi”.

Takeout-things

You also can get delicious things there like below. Black beans contain many ingredients that are good for health and beauty, and have been respected and eaten since ancient times with the desire to live longer (forever).

They taste sweet and delicious, I’ve never tasted something like that aside from Japan. Let’s try it when you come to Shimogamo shrine.
