Kamigamo Shrine is said to be one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto. Aoi Matsuri, one of the three major festivals in Kyoto, is one of the most popular events, along with the highlight of a historic shrine that has been registered as a World Heritage Site.

Kamigamo shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Japan along with Shimogamo shrine. It’s located at the foot of Kitayama, upstream of the Kamo River flowing through Kyoto. In addition, summer in Kyoto is hot and humid, but it is cooler than the city and is filled with very fresh air.

Kamigamo Shrine is a short walk from the Kamogawa River, which runs through the center of Kyoto. It is about a 5-minute walk from the nearest bus stop, Kamigamo Shrine, Kyoto City Bus. When you go to the precincts, you will see a torii gate. The grounds of Kamigamo Shrine are very large. From Ichi-no-Torii to Ni-no-torii, this long prayer road and lawn arena are widespread.

There’s an interesting thing called Tatezuna, which are the two cone-shaped sand mounds in front of Hai-den represent Mt. Ko-Yama in which the deity resides. It may be difficult to understand it for detail, but it was surprisingly large and had a sacred atmosphere.
